Attorney Chris Baxter, Law Offices of Christopher L. Baxter, returned as an adjunct professor at Widener Law School for the 2023 Spring semester, teaching DWI Legal Theory and Practice.

Attorney Baxter returned to present a CLE for the Burlington County Bar Association in January of 2023. That CLE is now posted as a course on the Garden State CLE website.

Chris Baxter will be moderating and presenting at The Sixth Amendment Confrontation Clause: Case Law Primer & Update And the Emerging “Forensic Science” Confrontation Exception this evening. The seminar will focus on the issue of the Confrontation Clause, due to the bombshell case of Crawford v. Washington.

Chris Baxter was a guest lecturer at a Burlington County Bar Association Seminar for attorneys. Mr. Baxter updated all attendees on recent New Jersey Supreme Court developments in blood and urine admissibility in DWI prosecutions. Mr. Baxter also covered recent New Jersey Supreme Court developments regarding search and seizure issues.

Chris Baxter hosted and recently spoke as a lecturer at a Burlington County Bar Association Seminar for lawyers. The seminar was an update on all DWI cases in the last year as well as the Dos and Don’ts of a municipal court defense practice.

Chris Baxter was a guest speaker at a Burlington County Bar Association Seminar regarding growth of law practices. Mr. Baxter covered the implication of law practice growth as it related to DWI defense work.

Chris Baxter lectured Widener law students regarding the use of experts in a New Jersey DWI prosecution. Mr. Baxter discussed the use of experts to defend people accused of DWI. Mr. Baxter covered the field sobriety testing, drug recognition issues, breath sampling, and health issues.

Chris Baxter lectured Widener law students regarding New Jersey DWI sentencing issues including Fifth Amendment issues as well as collateral consequences of a DWI conviction. Mr. Baxter covered out-of-state driver’s licenses issues as well as out-of-state conviction implications.

Chris Baxter and Bob Ramsey, Esquire lectured Widener law students regarding permitted and prohibited defenses in New Jersey DWI prosecutions.

Mr. Baxter lectured Widener law students regarding the DWI discovery process in a New Jersey DWI prosecution. Mr. Baxter covered trial strategies, the use of the traffic stop, balance tests, and breath testing as a way to evaluate a DWI case. Mr. Baxter discussed various DWI defenses with respect to discovery issues. Finally, Mr. Baxter discussed destruction of evidence in New Jersey DWI cases.

Chris Baxter lectured Widener law students regarding the Refusal offense in New Jersey. Mr. Baxter explained the legislative history of the offense and compared it to a DWI prosecution. Mr. Baxter also discussed various defenses in a Refusal prosecution.

Chris Baxter lectured Widener law students regarding evidentiary issues in blood and urine DWI prosecutions in New Jersey. Mr. Baxter discussed medical confidentiality issues with respect to blood and urine DWIs. He also covered aspects of the Sixth Amendment and the new case law which has a significant impact on DWI blood and urine prosecutions in New Jersey. Finally, Mr. Baxter discussed drug DWIs and the use of expert and lay witnesses in such cases. Mr. Baxter provided an explanation and demonstration of the drug recognition expert (“DRE”) examination in conjunction with law enforcement guests.

Chris Baxter lectured Widener law students on the science of blood and urine testing in a DWI prosecution. Mr. Baxter explained how blood and urine testing works. He also covered the technical and scientific defenses in DWI blood and urine cases. Mr. Baxter also reviewed various Fourth Amendment issues regarding the admissibility of blood and urine results in a New Jersey DWI prosecution.

Mr. Baxter lectured Widener law students regarding the “under the influence” DWI offense in New Jersey. Mr. Baxter covered aspects including the standardized field sobriety tests and their use in the DWI courtroom. Mr. Baxter conducted an in-class demonstration of SFST testing with law enforcement guests.

Chris Baxter lectured Widener law students regarding the per se DWI violation as well as the “allowing an intoxicated driver” violation. Mr. Baxter discussed the legislative history of per se violations and the “allowing” an intoxicated operation of a vehicle as a separate offense.

Mr. Baxter lectured at Widener Law School regarding the physiological effects of alcohol on the body. Mr. Baxter explained to the law students the process of intoxication, how the human body metabolizes alcohol, and various absorption variables.

Mr. Baxter was a lecturer at Widener Law School regarding issues related to the traffic stop, arrest, and processing in a DWI prosecution. Mr. Baxter discussed the lack of justification for DWI motor vehicle stops as well as DWI roadblocks and Fifth Amendment issues.

Chris Baxter lectured on the history of evidential breath testing, the breathalyzer, and the Alcotest device. Mr. Baxter explained to Widener Law School students how the old breathalyzer worked and how the new Alcotest works. Mr. Baxter also discussed legal challenges to the Alcotest device.

Chris Baxter lectured Widener Law School students on the elements of “operation” and “motor vehicle” in a New Jersey DWI prosecution. Mr. Baxter also discussed recent unpublished DWI decisions which impact current DWI laws.

Chris Baxter lectured at Widener Law School providing a comparison between Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania DWI laws. Mr. Baxter also discussed public policy behind DWI laws, the history of drunk driving legislation, and various elements of the offense.
